This Facilities Master Plan is the first long-term planning document prepared by the Boston Public Schools (“BPS”) in over four decades. This is a comprehensive planning document prepared in close cooperation with the City of Boston and with extensive community engagement, including parent surveys, listening sessions, and focus groups. The data-driven plan offers a framework that will support the district’s vision for facilities work going forward, including new buildings, major renovations, school reconfigurations, expansions, mergers and closures. The plan centers around a collective definition of the BPS High-Quality Student Experience, which consists of four core components:
- rigorous and culturally affirming learning experiences;
- wellness and enrichment;
- supportive network of caring adults; and
- physical spaces that support learning.
As part of plan, BPS assessed the physical spaces using data from school walkthroughs, site plans, and the Facilities Conditions Assessment in each Boston Public School building to understand whether each school facility currently supports the BPS High-Quality Student Experience. The resulting data is available through online dashboards and interactive maps that include the Building Experience Score, any feasible model space summaries, the capacity of the building, the enrollment of the school and the utilization rate.
