Clean Air in Buildings Challenge for Schools

The Clean Air in Buildings Challenge for Schools course, co-developed by the Efficient and Healthy Schools Program, Center for Green Schools, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), equips school district staff with foundational knowledge to take action in improving indoor air quality (IAQ) in schools. Built on the EPA’s Clean Air in Buildings Challenge, this course focuses on the technical aspects of assessing and improving ventilation, filtration, air cleaning, and monitoring IAQ in school buildings.

This free course consists of six self-guided, interactive modules that allow participants to enter and exit the program on their own schedule. The course takes approximately three hours to complete, after which participants receive a personalized certificate of completion.

The course is designed to support school staff’s knowledge and skills to:

  • Explain how ventilation and filtration strategies, supported by scientific evidence, effectively enhance IAQ.
  • Identify and apply practical ventilation and filtration methods to improve IAQ.
  • Evaluate additional strategies to manage IAQ, such as air cleaning technologies and continuous IAQ monitoring.
  • Outline key steps in creating an IAQ action plan.
