The Impacts of the Los Angeles Wildfires on Students: Lessons for Schools Nationwide

UndauntedK12, EdTrust,

Extreme weather is increasingly disrupting student learning and deepening inequities across school communities nationwide. This report examines the January 2025 wildfire-related school closures in Los Angeles, and the disproportionate impact on vulnerable student groups. An analysis revealed that 75% were from socioeconomically disadvantaged households, 66% were Latino, 40% were multilingual learners, and 10% had disabilities. Frequent or prolonged closures further hinder academic progress, strain social-emotional wellbeing, and reduce access to essential school-based supports. The report offers actionable recommendations for policymakers, education leaders, and community members to build resilient schools that protect health, safety, and wellbeing in the face of extreme weather.
