What Do Schoolyard Forests Really Cost?

This report helps school district administrators, facilities managers, and grounds maintenance staff understand the real installation and long-term maintenance costs of schoolyard forests compared to grass, asphalt, and artificial turf. Using a hypothetical yet realistic model of 50 trees in a 15,000-square-foot area, the report calculates costs across three tree growth phases—establishment (years 0–3), juvenile (years 4–15), and maturity (years 16–40)—over a 40-year period.

Key findings show that schoolyard forests have the lowest total installation cost at $212,674, below asphalt ($226,875) and far below artificial turf ($360,938), though above grass ($103,125). Over 40 years, schoolyard forests also have the lowest cumulative maintenance cost ($440,869; average $11,022/year), significantly less than grass ($873,064), asphalt ($477,300), and artificial turf ($1,090,000). When installation and maintenance are combined, the schoolyard forest totals $653,543—less than asphalt ($704,175), grass ($976,189), and artificial turf ($1,450,938). Applying a 3% net present value discount rate, schoolyard forests and asphalt reach near parity ($469,856 vs. $466,070), while grass and artificial turf remain substantially more expensive.

The report breaks down maintenance tasks by growth phase—irrigation, mulching, weeding, pruning, and arborist inspections—and distinguishes between tasks manageable by district staff, student volunteers, and contracted professionals. It emphasizes that early investment in formative pruning and proper establishment practices reduces long-term liability and cost. The report focuses on California school districts and draws on pilot projects in Los Angeles and Sacramento.
