An Imperfect Space: Logistical Considerations in School-Based Health Centers

Hannah Palme', Daniel Skinner, Sara Bode, Mary Kay Irwin,

Research across multiple disciplines has demonstrated the value of school-based health centers (SBHCs), but few studies examine the logistical and physical plant challenges of establishing SBHCs in educational settings. This small qualitative study used semi-structured interviews of medical and education staff to identify the challenges encountered in setting up SBHCs, as well as exploring solutions generated by the respondents. In particular, the authors call for:

  • Dedicated funding for the construction of SBHCs
  • Improved understanding of the space needs for SBHCs, and
  • Blueprints for collaborative practice within SBHCs.

The authors conclude that any new build or significant renovation of school facilities should include appropriate space for SBHCs.
