Green Schoolyard Lecture Series: Fires, Vegetation, and Schoolyards in the Wildland-Urban Interface
Hosted by Green Schoolyards America
Join Green Schoolyards America on Thursday, February 12, 2026 at 11:00 AM PT/2:00 PM ET for the fifth session of their Green Schoolyard Lecture Series: “Fires, Vegetation, and Schoolyards in the Wildland-Urban Interface.”
Francisco Escobedo, Research Scientist for the United States Forest Service, will share an overview of the wildland-urban interface (WUI), how vegetation differs between urban and WUI areas, and how this shapes what we can and should do regarding fire in urban landscapes, given the many benefits trees and vegetation have in our communities and schools.
This lecture series discusses emerging topics and provides guidance for creating and stewarding high-quality green schoolyards and schoolyard forests. Sessions feature presentations by subject-area experts including Green Schoolyards America’s staff, along with time for audience Q&A. Recordings of previous lectures are available on Green Schoolyards America’s website.
