Green Schoolyard Lecture Series: Healthy Soils for Healthy School Trees

Hosted by Green Schoolyards America

Join Green Schoolyards America on Thursday, May 7, 2026 at 11:00 AM PT/2:00 PM ET for the next session of their Green Schoolyard Lecture Series: “Healthy Soils for Healthy School Trees.”

Dr. Susan Day, Adjunct Professor of Urban Forestry and Urban Soils at the University of British Columbia, and Emerita Faculty at the Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation, Virginia Tech will share how healthy trees, landscapes, and gardens are critical elements for schools, but maintenance can be erratic, and many soils have been damaged by past building construction and struggle to support healthy native plants. Dr. Day will walk through a basic assessment process and highlight rehabilitation approaches for school grounds.

This lecture series discusses emerging topics and provides guidance for creating and stewarding high-quality green schoolyards and schoolyard forests. Sessions feature presentations by subject-area experts including Green Schoolyards America’s staff, along with time for audience Q&A. Recordings of previous lectures are available on Green Schoolyards America’s website.
