The Wildfire Smoke Preparedness in Community Buildings Grant Program, administered by the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Air and Radiation, supports efforts to mitigate the impact of wildfire smoke on indoor air quality. This federal grant program provides funding to state agencies, federally recognized Tribes, public pre-schools, local educational agencies, and non-profit organizations for assessing, preventing, controlling, and reducing wildfire smoke hazards in community buildings. Grants range from $350,000 to $2,000,000 per recipient. Funded under Section 103(b)(3) of the Clean Air Act, the program received a $7 million appropriation from Congress for fiscal year 2024.

The EPA intends to issue a new funding opportunity for 2025, subject to Congressional appropriations. Eligible activities include air quality assessments, ventilation system upgrades, and other smoke mitigation strategies aimed at protecting public health. In the 2024 cycle, selectees included state agencies, universities, and school districts. This grant plays a crucial role in helping communities prepare for and respond to increasing wildfire risks by improving air quality in shared spaces. Interested applicants should monitor EPA announcements for the 2025 funding cycle.
