Climate Readiness in California’s TK-12 Schools: A Resilience and Adaptation Toolkit

UndauntedK12, Ten Strands, California Collaborative for Educational Excellence,

As California’s climate-related disasters grow in frequency and intensity, school communities are increasingly impacted by extreme heat, wildfires, flooding, and other disruptions that threaten student well-being, learning, and school infrastructure. This toolkit provides school leaders, educators, policymakers, and community members with actionable tools and resources to help their communities prepare for, recover from, and adapt to both sudden emergencies and long-term impacts of climate change. The toolkit includes two core sections: one focused on comprehensive planning with a climate-ready mindset, and another offering topic-specific resources for adapting school buildings and grounds to specific weather risks like extreme heat, flooding, wildfire, wildfire smoke, and grid instability. Resources highlight examples from early adopter districts and counties that are incorporating climate resilience, adaptation, mitigation strategies into their emergency response and facilities plans.
