Joint Use of Public Schools: A Framework for Promoting Healthy Communities
Jeffrey M. Vincent,
This article situates the joint use framework within the academic discourse that explores the links between built environments and health. Although there is an increasing interest among public health and planning professionals in promoting the joint use of K–12 public schools to create healthy and sustainable communities, this area has received limited focus in urban planning and public health discussions. The author assesses the current status of K–12 joint use by reviewing academic literature and related texts, conducting interviews, engaging in participant observation, and providing case studies. Additionally, the author develops a classification system for joint use to support researchers and practitioners in their work.
