Promoting Physical Activity Through the Shared Use of School Recreational Spaces: A Policy Statement From the American Heart Association

This policy statement from the American Heart Association offers recommendations for federal, state, and local decision-makers to support and expand opportunities for physical activity in communities through the shared use of school spaces. Studies suggest that challenges to shared use include additional costs, liability protection, communication among stakeholders interested in sharing spaces, and decision-making regarding scheduling and space allocation. However, local governments must enhance support and create opportunities that address these factors. They argue that most Americans are not sufficiently physically active, even though regular physical activity improves health and reduces the risk of many chronic diseases. Individuals living in rural, non-White, and lower-income communities often lack sufficient access to places for physical activity, which can contribute to their lower levels of activity. The shared use of school recreational facilities can provide safe and affordable spaces for communities.
