Quality Schools and Healthy Neighborhoods and the Future of DC – Policy Report

21st Century School Fund (21CSF), Urban Institute, Brookings Institution,

Following an in-depth research study commissioned by the District of Columbia Office of the State Superintendent of Education, the 21st Century School Fund, the Brookings Institution, and the Urban Institute provided policy recommendations to integrate urban planning across traditional school system and charter sectors and to ensure that overall housing and population considerations were factored into educational facility planning.

This policy report draws on extensive quantitative analysis of student, school, and neighborhood-level data, focus groups with parents and high school dropouts, and meetings with city stakeholders and officials in both the education and housing sectors. This report was informed by the findings of the companion study, “Quality Schools and Healthy Neighborhoods and the Future of DC – Research Report.
