Examining School Facilities And Their Impact On Student

This quantitative dissertation explores the relationship between school facility conditions and student academic achievement within a large urban school district in Texas. Drawing upon Allen’s (2017) Nine Foundations of a Healthy Building—including air quality, lighting, and ventilation—the study provides a comparative analysis of students attending fully rebuilt schools versus those in recently renovated facilities. It is a vital resource for state agencies, local school districts, superintendents, and facility managers seeking evidence-based justifications for infrastructure modernization.

The research utilizes data from the Texas Education Agency to evaluate STAAR assessment scores, attendance rates, and graduation rates. Key findings indicate that students in rebuilt schools consistently outperformed their peers in renovated campuses across all measured metrics. Notably, rebuilt facilities were associated with significant performance gains in mathematics (+8.2%), science (+7.6%), and English Language Arts (+6.45%). Furthermore, the study documents a 3.2% increase in attendance and a 6.2% rise in graduation rates at rebuilt campuses, suggesting that modern infrastructure directly improves student engagement and long-term persistence.

Ultimately, this work highlights that school facilities are pedagogical instruments that actively shape the learning environment. The data underscores the necessity of strategic infrastructure investment as a primary lever to close persistent achievement gaps. By prioritizing comprehensive rebuilding projects over piecemeal renovations, districts can foster environments that send a powerful message of commitment to student success and opportunity.
