Condition of America’s Public School Facilities: 2012-13
This report provides nationally representative data on the condition of public school facilities during the 2012-2013 school year conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). It draws from information about these facilities, offering updates to earlier research on this topic. The authors inquired about building systems, structures, outdoor conditions, needed repairs, and the time since previous repairs. Major findings indicated that more than half of public schools needed to spend money on repairs, renovations, and modernizations to bring school buildings into good overall condition. The estimated cost for these updates was 197 billion dollars. The average reported number of years since the construction of the main instructional building was 44 years.
